Bombshells vs Los Alamos 5-27-16

This past Sunday the BCB Bombshells hosted the Los Alamos team.  I think this is the third bout I've head reffed now.  It was a double header, with the Bombshells bout followed by the first home team bout I've ever been a part of, which I'll report about later.

Foot massage

It's so important to take care of our feet.  All skaters, refs and players, are on their feet all the time,  I don't know how many skaters actually get pedicures and foot massages,  but as a massage therapist I highly recommend it.  Even if it's just the feet to the knees it will help.

The Undiscovered Jam Ref

I rarely get to jam ref these days, what with sort of being in charge and all.  So it's a good thing when I go to other leagues and they will let me follow a jammer around for a while.  I forget that it's a lot more skating than the current slow reffing of roller derby is now.  I like it though, it's great exercise.  I don't want to forget how to do it, or the nuances of the position.  It's also fun to have skaters try out the JR position, since they don't always think about everything that goes into being a ref.

New verbiage

These new words for misconduct... while I'm glad it's no longer just misconduct, it's gonna take a while to get these down and then remember them for what they entail.  Of course, per WFTDA's norm, some have interesting wording.  Here's a link to all of these and what they entail.  Most of them are self explanatory , but I find "Charging" and just the term "unsporting"  to be a bit confusing.  It'll probably get revised once these have been in play a bit longer.

Bully Julie promo

I've known Bully almost as long as I've been an official, and she's a wonderful, caring person and a great skater, coach and official. I saw her for a minute while I was back in San Diego last month, but she disappeared quickly and I didn't get to say hi. Next time!

players as refs

I think it's a great idea.  I'm working on getting more of the players to do this more often, as some kind of practice credit for them.  The Sunday B/C scrimmages would be ideal, especially for All-Stars or players who might not be well enough for actual scrimmage but would still like to skate.

This would be helpful to both the players and the skater as the players would have more eyes on them and the skater would get a deeper knowledge of what refs are seeing during a scrimmage.  According to MF Cookie, it's also a lot of fun!
