April 9th bout

Turns out I'll be reffing twice in San Diego during this trip.  North County Derby Alliance, one of Southern California's newest roller derby leagues has an afternoon bout on April 9th, which ever so conveniently works into my schedule of birthday events while I am out there.  I know a lot of these players and I can't wait to see them again.

penalty verbiage means something

I should include this in one of my "Dear WFTDA..." posts, but since it's going to be a subject (eventually) of an officials training class I'm just writing about it now.  This is a run through of that particular session.  I get to try things out here since it's kind of an open forum.  Even among refs there isn't quite a consensus of how the penalties should be called, aside from "color, number, penalty".

Seems like there is not much of flow to the penalty calling.  It's "cutting" but not "back blocking".  Of course there is "blocking out of play" but it's a "failure to reform".  Let's not even get started on pack destruction calls.  That I have heard and called so many different ways it can make one's head spin.

Kind of Slow

It's been a bit slow this month for derby stuff- lots of practices canceled due to holidays, bouts and snow.  I've got plans, big plans for the Sunday officials training, but we've only been able to have one all month.  And that's OK, we can get going in April, except for the Sunday I'll be reffing in San Diego.  So I haven't had that much to talk about here.

Apr 10, 2016 game

Now it can be told!  For a variety of reasons I didn't post this the other day, but I can do it now.  I'll be headed to San Diego for a small vacation (with PTO, first time in ever so many years)) over my birthday.  That alone makes me happy, but I'll also be getting to ref one and possibly two bouts while I am there.  I've been fortunate that each trip that I've made back there I've got to see my old league and friends.  It is one of the true blessings of this sport that you can make new friends and go to new leagues and still be welcomed back to where you started.

Training day one

This went well, though today was more about what this training time will entail.  But there were seven people there and we had a good exchange of ideas for what we will be doing. The hope is that we will have more refs and NSOs show up and then that will help in the  B/C team scrimmage that happens right after the officials training ends.

Officials Training

Starting this Sunday the Bomb Squad will start having a officials training class/practice, which will entail rules, regulations, etiquette and helping out the skaters practicing as well, then lead right into scrimmage.  BCB had ref practices on Friday nights when I started, but alas it didn't last that long.  I hope having it right before the B/C scrimmage will encourage more NSO and Skating officials to show up and then stay for scrimmage.

didn't own it

"Own it."

I've talked about the advice my friend Patience gave me in the past (of course, I can't find the story on the blog now, go figure, right?).  I've talked about it more than once.  I've given that advice to many rookie refs when they are reluctant to make calls.  It's one of those things I believe- go in all the way and be firm and strong.  It's OK if you are wrong, you can always learn from that.  It's going to happen and I have no ego about getting any of my calls reversed if they are not right.
