that darn WFTDA ref test

Today I took the WFTDA Ref Certification test for I think the fifth time, and for the fifth time I didn't pass it.  I'm not broken up about it at all, since it doesn't prevent me from reffing bouts or anything, but I would like to pass it sometime.  Especially after having been a ref for over six years.  I'll keep trying.  I felt more prepared today for it and yet I actually missed two more questions than the last time.  It's always a learning experience, right?

Here's something I've never done before: evals for other officials for their certification.  I've got two or three to do from the last bout and I've been putting it off a bit (sorry) due to a wide variety of things, not the least of which is I want to do a good job on them and have no experience with filling them out.  But I'm doing them tomorrow, that's my goal, which should be attainable, I think,  Just a matter of jumping in and I do know several other officials who could help me out if I'm in a pinch for what to do.

2-13-16 BCB vs DRD double header

So this past Saturday I head reffed my first official bout in two and a half years.  It went pretty well, thanks to Rocket's amazing notes before hand.  In fact, the entire officiating crew was great for both bouts. I have to admit I was more nervous about this than ever before, simply because I hadn't done it for so long and things are different with teams that are WFTDA affiliated (and not from Southern California).  I really didn't want to mess anything up in my HR debut for the league.

Boulder County Bombers promo

A friend of mine found this last night and showed it to me. I'd never seen it before and it's nearly five years old. So I figured I'd share it, since I always enjoy little historical things like this.

Staffing bouts can be tricky.  Sometimes you have to dig and scrape to get a full crew, then sometimes 19 refs want to be part of a double header all at once.  Then it comes down to what? Experience?  Enthusiasm? First come first serve?  These are questions I haven't had to think about in several years now, and all of a sudden I do.  I want everyone that deserves to skate and ref to skate and ref, so occasionally there are some hard choices to make.  I don't generally like to give people bad news of any sort, and telling anyone who is a regular or was a regular ref that I can't use them is unpleasant.

FoCo hosts BCB scrimmage

This past Thursday FoCo Girls Gone Derby hosted the BCB Bombshells for a rather late scrimmage.  It was a fun scrimmage between two pretty evenly matched teams, plus there was a full ref crew plus an extra floater ref (Hardcore Ken, who got to "supervise" the rest of us, always a good way to get feedback that way).  We were up at the QDoba Events center, which is a really great place to have a scrimmage at, even if it starts at 9:15 PM or so.

Head ref again

I've mentioned it a bit, but I'm now the head ref at BCB.  I guess it really hasn't sunk it til now, with our first real bouts looming on this coming Saturday.  Just seems more official now, I guess.  I never thought I would be doing this again, simply due to the great officials I've been around out here.  And yet here I am again.
