oh, those goals

Seems like the last couple years I've been asked to write out some ref goals.  I don't think I've posted them, but I have put some thought into them. However, it also seems by the end of the year I have completely forgotten what those goals were.  Sure, last year I was pretty much out of the picture for 5 months, and that really will stymie any sort of plans one has (I also wanted to go to Dinosaur National Monument, and that hasn't happened either).  It's been an interesting year for the Bomb Squad, and I'm hoping this coming year will be a little smoother overall.

I am sure I have an email somewhere about them.  Let me take a look...

My Confession

I like to think I'm a good ref, and a team player. But I'm also only human, with foibles and frailties like everyone else. Usually I can be professional, but one time, for a brief period, I failed in doing so.   They say confession is good for the soul, so this is what I'm going to do here.  I'm not going to name names, as the people who were there know what happened and it's all in the past now.  I'm not proud of what happened on my side of the story, but I think it's understandable given the circumstances.  I am sorry it happened but since I can't change it now, I'd like to use this as a reminder to myself not to ever let it happen again.

Lead Jammer by Team Rockstar!

I had seen this cute song and video about four years ago but had completely forgotten about it until last night when it popped up in my feed. It's a nice little power pop song, looks like it was written and performed by mostly derby people. It's pretty catchy as well.

Rebels at the Wagon Wheel

Last night I went down to the Wagon Wheel to help ref a fun Rebel's "Friends and Family" bout.  It was really fun, as it was only three 15 minute periods.  I've often argued for two 20 minute periods for real bouts, but I think if we did four 15 minute periods that would work as well.  It's not a popular opinion, but since I'm not in charge of anything like that it's rather moot.  But I seem to have digressed from my original topic.  Squirrel!

for the love of derby

Last night BCB hosted it's annual Xmas themed scrimmage, which was also it's last Thursday night scrimmage of the year.  When I got there about 6:30 it looked like it would be teams playing 3:3, as there weren't a lot of skaters there yet.  It was quite cold outside, below 40 degrees and not much warmer in the barnshelter.  But more players showed up and having bodies moving around warmed up the surroundings somewhat, however slightly.

Yay NSOs!

I actually meant to post this in NSOvember, but due to connectivity issues it's going to be presented now, since I feel like as much as I try, I never give the Non-Skating Officials as much credit as they are due and deserve.  I know so many wonderful people who make this sport happen on a regular basis, and have done several bios on them (but not enough) and I'm so grateful that they give up their time and energy to do these necessary and sometimes thankless tasks.  And do them very well, I might add.

the Doctor refs

For the plethora of Star Wars inspired derby names out there, there seems to be a derth of Doctor Who inspired names.  I'm sure there are some, but I can't think of any at the moment. I should have started a list long ago of all the great sci-fi names I have heard over the years (Phoenix Endsong being probably the being the first I can think, along with her partner in crime Jonslaught)  but I know there have been a lot.  I'd like to have come up with something like that for me, but since I was gifted this name I chose to embrace that.  I don't always have to be a nerd all the time.  It just seems that way!

THIS IS ROLLER DERBY HitSquadTv Commercial

Here's a really cool promo video starring several leagues from Southern California, and I bet I know several of the refs that are present. I definitely know at least two of the players, since Litl Rampage is the last jammer in the shot. I remember her first practice- we all thought she was a there to skate with the juniors.

it's official (so to speak)

I think I might have mentioned how happy I am as an official that there will be no more letters in the players numbers starting next month.  Thankfully the WFTDA let everyone have a year to prepare, which most skaters complied with early on.

That was smart thinking since then they could get used to hearing a one to four digit number instead of the jumble of letters and numbers that they might have gotten used to.  I know, I know, some of those combinations were really clever to read and see, but for officials it could be a large pain in the butt.
