Exactly Two Years Ago

It exactly two years ago this evening I made my reffing debut for the Boulder County Bombers.  It was at the local Y and had been snowing on and off all day.  I remember never having been that cold walking inside to a bout before.  Now it's not that unusual at all to be a bit chilled to start off with before getting a proper warm up and starting to officiate.  I have a lot of memories about that day, most how happy I was to be reffing again, since it had been so long and I wasn't sure I was ever going to fit in properly in my new league.

too cold to scrimmage

Today's scrimmage was called due to there not being enough players to have one.  I have to say I'm not that upset about it, simply because it's flippin' cold outside.  The BarnShelter doesn't retain much heat, but there are heaters there and once you are skating, whether reffing or playing, you warm up pretty quickly.  Even so, I dress in layers.  Even got out my old ratty blue hooded sweatshirt so I can use that and it will have that rather unique derby smell instead of my good new one.  Yeah, the one that you can never really wash out of anything.

dreaming of derby

For whatever reason, I rarely dream about roller derby.  I only remember one at the moment, and that was two nights ago.  It was this odd melange of my current league and my former league.  I take this as a sign, since SDRD may be out in CO to play at Besterns and I'm going to apply to officiate there this year.  It also had a track that went from flat to banked and back again.  None of this surprises me, though I've never actually skated on a banked track and really only ever reffed about ten minutes of one of their scrimmages in six years.

About last year...

This time last year I had no job, no car and I couldn't breathe.

Let me rephrase that: as a temp worker, I was between assignments, and my parked car had been hit and totaled by a 17 year old when he slid on the ice into it (no one was injured by my car) and I couldn't catch my breath.  It turns out what I thought was the lingering pneumonia was actually an undniagosed abscess on my liver.  Which is really something no one would ever think to look for, right?

six years ago today

Six years ago today I reffed my first bout with San Diego Roller Derby.  I was supposed to ref the previous bout, but had just started a new job and couldn't make it.  Which made me sad, but since this was the final bout of SDRD's season, I was glad to be here for it.  This is one of the times that I wish I had been blogging longer, since I would remember more details about the bout itself and how all the preparation for it happened, as well as my mindset going into the game.  Alas, hindsight is 20/20, isn't it?

Watching champs

Or wftda championships as it's also called with a large group of derby people is a lot of fun.  Last night was the 2015 Championship bout for the coveted Hydra (and I used to know why it was called that, but I don't any more) and BCB had a viewing party at a local brewery, 300 Suns (who are really great, btw).  There were probably about 30 or more people there, I didn't quite get a head count.  Everyone brought some great food and desserts and overall a wonderful time was had by all.

FoCo scrimmage

Last night BCB traveled north to fort Collins for a mix up scrimmage.  This was also my first time there as well.  Though perhaps I was there a million years ago in another pre-derby life. I don't remember if it was that place or a different, now long gone roller rink.  There used to be a lot of them in this part of the world in the 80s.  Guess the land was needed to have a Sprawl-mart on every corner of the world.  Sorry, it's my issue and I'll deal with it.
