two years ago

Two years ago today I had my first contact with Conner, BCB's Head Ref at that time.  You can read about that here if you are curious as to what that entailed.  I was excited to begin reffing with a new league and also a bit nervous as I knew no one at all.  That can be a bit scary, even if you've been reffing four years and know how wonderful most derby folk are in general.

the "in" jokes

Every place people gather in any kind of numbers, be it work, sports or even for leisure has it's share of jokes that are endemic to that place and time.  It helps bond people with shared memories, right?  Though if you are not part of the experience then often times the joke will not be understood or even seem funny, no matter how hilarious it really was at the time or how funny it should be to everyone else regardless of whether they were part of the jocularity or not (and yes, I really wanted to use the word "jocularity).

バトルクリーク・ブロー 主題曲

Jackie Chan on roller skates! I saw the movie Battle Creek Brawl, aka The Big Brawl (1980) several years ago. It was Jackie's first starring role in picture made in the United States. It's pretty good, overall, but not as great as some of his Hong Kong classics, since they really didn't quite let Jackie be Jackie.

What's her name?

I've written about derby names before here and there, but recently I introduced a friend of mine to the sport and several of my friends.  I don't ever think about their real names when I say "This is Cookie, Phoebe and Smashy."  That's who they are to me.  I have to actually stop and think of their real names (if I can) and then it sounds weird to say "Laura, Sydney and Amber".  I know the people but I don't know those names at all.  Some players do utilize their actual first names or last names, like Keythong, even though he switched to his full real last name

"Own it!"

So as MF Cookie is going through her ref training I am reminded again of  some of the best advice I was ever given early on in my illustrious roller derby referee career.  This came from my good friend Patience, AKA Achilles Fools.  We had gotten to know each other a bit at after parties due to songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and yes, "Don't Stop Believing" which still makes me think of her.  There was also the time on the bar floor which is documented, but I figured I wouldn't push it by using that picture at this point in time.  I'll save it for a later date, like when she does her player bio.

My Derby Family

In roller derby you often times here teams referred to as a "family" because everyone involved becomes friends if they stick around for any time over six months.  As it happens, this is a plus and a minus, a blessing and curse (a "blurse", if you will) since it's also an organization of wildly different people.  Much like a family.  Over the course of six years I've read and witnessed many stories of derby people helping out their families in various times of crisis- heck, I've been part of the helping out a time or two.

Bridesmaids vs Bridezillas at the Barnshelter

Thursday night BCB returned to the Barnshelter for the first scrimmage there in quite some time.  It was a themed scrimmage, and usually I prefer the ones with horror or superhero themes, this one was a lot of fun.  I think the players in white were supposed to be the bridezillas, since the skaters in pink all looked like they were on Team Princess Bubble Yum.  That's how it's supposed to work, right?  The brides make their best friends wear the worst possible outfits.  Thank goodness groomsmen all get to wear tuxes, for the most part.  I wish I could have at least found one of my bow ties (bow ties are cool) to wear.

Roller Derby Mom

This video was the topic of discussion last Sunday at dinner, and the subject of said video had lamented that it only had 50 views. This post is an attempt to rectify that matter. I'm a bit surprised that I never posted it before, but it does predate this blog by about nine months or so.

Mickey Mouth profile

Real Name:
Michelle "Mickey" Hess

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
I have been Mickey Mouth for years before derby, well, because I am loud and my name is Mickey. My number was 6'2" because I am that tall with skates, but since I didn't check the roster before my jersey was made, I am now 6'1" (I think I am shrinking anyway.)

When is your derbyversary?
I started reffing in June of 2012, California doesn't seem to have an off season, so that was about 3 seasons of bouts accomplished before moving to the midwest. I started playing in August of 2014 and have started bouting in February, 2015.

the "off" season

Roller Derby is a strange sport occasionally- I've heard there is an actual "off season" but that usually only means competitive bouts.  I've yet to actually experience that off season, which isn't a bad thing for refs, mostly.  There are ostensibly three months where players get to rest and recuperate and work on skills and generally take it easy.  It's a good idea, in theory.  And there's the magic word- theory.  And we all know how well some theories work out, right?

upcoming collaboration!

I have been approached recently about writing a column about both bad sportsmanship and bullying of other players and/or officials.  Now, I don't have too much experience in derby with either of those things, so we are going to do a collaboration for this blog.  I have had a couple guest columnists in the past, which is always fun since it's something I don't have to write.  Still, this will be a where I actually work with someone.
