The Division 2 playoffs have started now, and the Boulder County Bombers All-Stars are in Detroit for this round. They played in the first bout against Berlin (yes, Berlin Germany) yesterday and that made the local news. I've included the link (click on it, it's easy!) to this story as well as it's not that easy to figure out how to embed it here. Well not for me. It's probably right in front of me, but alas...

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
So I found a few names I liked, but most great ideas are taken on Two Evils. I decided one night to make my derby name a family discussion. I thought we could brainstorm dinosaur names because our oldest daughter (4 years old at the time!) loved to watch Dinosaur Train everyday. My name Smashalotapus (not exactly a dinosaur name) emerged from that talk over dinner. My number 151 is a combination of significant numbers. I love the number 5, but it was taken so I decided to add to 5. My oldest daughter was born on the 11th, my youngest was born on the 1st, and my husbands favorite number is 7 (1+5+1=7). And I love rum! So my number 151 encompasses all of those.

I love roller derby. I really do. And I've been fortunate that I've rarely had anything conflict with my reffing, aside from getting time off work occasionally. I also do bouts when I say I'm going to, unless I was deathly sick (see posts about that from last year when I actually did back out of one), even when I really didn't want to go. As with anything you love, there will be sacrifices to be made, and this time I got caught by one. That is, when it happens in about a month.

On Sundays BCB has a B/C scrimmage for all the new players who have been cleared to play. These scimmages are so much fun- the players have the new "love of derby" in their eyes and you can tell by the way they play. It's the rookie fire that everyone new to any sport always have. It happens when discovering anything new and wonderful- music, movies, sports or a new love. It's one of the best times and feelings anyone can have, and l love watching it in action.

Comedy isn't pretty, I've heard, nor is it easy. I have read comic books since before I actually could read, and now I don't much care for most of them because they are too dark and dreary and un-heroic. Having said that, there's a book on "the stands" these days based on the Batman '60s TV show which is a lot of fun. It uses all the characters from said show and adds some slight continuity along with the smiles and exclamations. Some of the writers go a little overboard with the dialog, not realizing less is more with this sort of thing. The material shouldn't be forced, just let it write itself.

According to none other than Jerry Seltzer, roller derby will be celebrating it's 80th birthday tomorrow. Eighty years is a very long time, why, it even predates Superman (but not by much)! My Stryker has formed a group on Facebook to make as many teams and leagues aware of this as possible, so this is my small way of helping her out. It's actually a rather important day to any of us who have ever laced up skates to play or ref, and also to those of us who don't skate but do all the rest of the hard work to make the bouts happen.

Last night there was a double header of roller derby at the Fillmore in downtown Denver. Well, I think it was downtown, since I wasn't driving or even the navigator. And Denver is rather large, so it could have been just about anywhere. I do know we drove by the zoo and the museum of natural history (no, you can't see the dinosaurs at 10:15 at night) but it was nice to be traveling with people instead of making that long trek down there by myself, I must say.

I think my biggest regret with this blog is not starting it sooner. I wish I been writing about all the various experiences and stories since I had started reffing and I really wish that I had been doing player profiles back then. I missed a lot of players and refs at that time. Many of my earliest friends and mentors have now retired and don't participate in this great sport any more. I know that's the way of all sports, but that doesn''t make it any more fun to know.

So after the last post I had a request about MVP awards, which I thought was a good idea. I have a few thoughts about them, and they are a bit contradictory, but I think I can explain my different positions on the same topic. At least it should make some sense, since this is a tricky topic, to say the least. I know it's a tradition to do this after every bout, but more and more leagues having two games on bout day the number of awards can get to about twelve for two different teams. That's a lot of awards to make and/or buy.
