Mike Nesmith- Cruisin'

The first time I saw this video I didn't know who Mike Nesmith was. The Monkees had yet to be re-aired on eMpTV and there was of course, no internet. I thought it was a cool video, but didn't realize he did a whole video album. Now I look at it as a snapshot of what LA was like in 1981, and of course, watching the skaters.

Walls...

I used to be able to say I've jammed once in my life.  Thanks to a question from MF Cookie, I thought I'd give it a try again last night.  And yeah, after that, I'll stand by my statement of "I'm a ref, not a player."  It's not like this was an actual scrimmage, just me going up against of four wall of All Stars, and then having two blockers come out of the "penalty box" to help me,  They all did a great job, I just don't have the skills to get by this tough wall...

Spring Double Header 5-23-15

Last night's double header featured two of the hardest hitting and most intense bouts I have ever reffed.  And after almost 6 years of reffing, that's saying something.  I had some friends in the audience and they really enjoyed both bouts, which are preferable to blowouts.

the Lone OPR

Tonight BCB has it's second set of bouts of the season, the last being way back in early January.  This will be the first time in almost a year that I've been truly well and able to participate.  Last Jaunary I was just out of the hospital and had gotten over a really bad stomach bug that day, so I perhaps could have been a bit better. Still, it had been so long since I'd reffed no way was I missing another bout.

Two Bouts for the Bandettes

by KGB

San Diego Roller Derby’s B team, The Bandettes, started off their 2015 season in Long beach against Beach Cities Roller Derby. While the Bandettes didn't take home the win it was a crowd pleaser game and Beach Cities had to fight us till the end. It was a high end B team we played against, and for a few of the Bandettes it was their first game.

Cruel Summer profile

Real Name:
Summer Whalen

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
Cruel Summer because I wanted something that incorporated my real name and I LOVE 80's music. #750 because there are 750 ml in a bottle of wine.  My alter ego is Van Whalen for the same reasons

What did you do athletically before you got into derby?
Artistic skating as a kid and Kempo Karate. Derby just made sense.

How did you get into derby?
I took my daughter to a birthday party at Skateworld and remembered how much I love skating. I'd been going to derby practice for a month before I saw my first game.

Taking advice

I've always thought I've been very open to taking advice from people. I still do, but there is a time and place for everything.  There are better times and there are worse times. It's all a matter of presentation.
So tonight when I was given some advice from a skater I didn't know, well, I am sure my face gave some attitude.
