Seems like four years ago everyone at SDRD had a fan page. I started mine then, and still keep up with it now. I realize some players want to keep their personal profiles away from derby, especially the more famous ones out there. I've no problem with that. That's a good idea, I think. It's been so long since I started mine I really don't remember why I did it. It predates this blog by a good 18 months, I think. There are mostly derby pictures and stuff in the albums, but I can't recall the last time I actually posted something other than the blog posts there. Which leads me to my next point:

Scrimmage tonight was canceled due to the unending snow storm that seems to keep going and going. Seriously, we are supposed to have some kind of snow until the middle of next week. If you are thinking that I am thinking that this sucks, you would be 100% correct. I've gotten to the point where I appreciate snow, but a whole week of it? Gimme a break, willya?

Yeah, I know. I live in Colorado now, where it snows. This month alone we've had a record 22" so far, and that's in the top five Februarys of all time (since they've recorded snowfall here, anyway). And there's still three days left in the month. Sure, it's pretty to look at, but there comes a time where you kind of want a break. And yes, I know, I was very spoiled by my lengthy tenure in San Diego, where it's chilly at 60 degrees.

I think I brought this upon myself. I should have known better than to start saying how happy I've been not being a head ref for almost 18 months. Sure, I've done a little bit at scrimmage, but I haven't Head Reffed a bout since that last double header up in Oceanside. And that hasn't bothered me in the least. But I should have known that life will go as it goes, heedless of my plans. Yes, this whole first paragraph has been intentionally vague, and I'm still thinking the rest of the post may be, until I decide what I want to do about this situation.

It's fun to see something click for someone, and when it happens in the middle of a scrimmage it's even better. Today we had three refs for our regular scrimmage, and for Mandamonium it was her third ever scrimmage. I had her in doing front pack in the first period, but then for the second period she switched over to the single jam ref.

I never really played more than four rounds of Dungeons and Dragons before- maybe two when I was fifteen and then several years later in the 90s maybe two more. The reasons were varied, it's not that I didn't want to, that's just the way life happens, right? Now I've played three weeks in a row with officials from the Bomb Squad (and one Bomber) and it's a lot of fun. There's food, laughter and the slaughter of many goblins that happens every week now.

Last night BCB hosted a Valentine Day themed scrimmage, titled appropriately enough "Love Hurts". This was the first time we had a full ref crew at the Barnshelter, and that was pretty nice. It all went rather smoothly and we did two periods. Occasionally if we have time we'll do a third period, but that didn't happen last night.

This was the first Sunday scrimmage I've been able to attend since July of last year. Not only because of that damn illness, but the timing was off for a lot of the players. That's all changed now that we have the Barnshelter and BCB has two home teams as well as the All-Stars and the Bombshells. I've never worked with a league with home teams before, since SDRD started their home teams the season after I moved, so I am looking forward to reffing these bouts this year as well as the regular ones.

It was so much warmer here this week! That really does help, I must say. Also have the Coby, the penalty box cat show up was a great plus. That's Butters there holding her. She really did stay in the penalty box most of the scrimmage. I think Butters did as well, though as you can see by her leg brace she's not skating just yet. There will probably have to be a cat wrangler NSO in the near future. There will probably be more than one volunteer for that job, since Coby is such a sweetheart.

I'll admit it, I really slacked off keeping track of the bouts I reffed last year. I did several, but thanks to that irritating illness I didn't quite have the wherewithall to keep track of it all after May. Dang it. Last night I had to try to find all the bouts I reffed. At least I remember the four I did for SDRD, since those all happened in one day. I only remembered the Nidaros team from last year's Mayday Mayhem, though I did jam ref a juniors bout on the slickest floor I have ever skated on. If I go this year I'll be changing to my outdoor wheels for sure. See, I do learn some things eventually!

I never knew how nerdy refs could be. I mean, I know mostly how nerdy I am, but I never expect it from other people. It shouldn't really surprise me though, it seems way more common nowadays. Anyway, a group of us have decided to get together to play some D&D today. I haven't played for well over ten years, probably longer, so I'm looking forward to it.
