First Scrimmage at the Barn

It hasn't quite been a month since I've been on skates, but it has been over a month since BCB has had a scrimmage.  Tonight's scrimmage was kind of a last minute thing, so there were just two refs there.  That reminded me of many scrimmages at SDRD, so it was kind of fun.  There were plenty of skaters there, since it was a tryout and an assessment time for the teams.

Right away I knew it was going to be a bit different when I was greeted by a rather small pig.  I called him Bacon Sandwich, but apparently his real name was (of course) Wilbur.  That's a picture of Jenitellya sqee-ing over him.  It happened a lot, especially when he got picked up.  He wouldn't have made a good sandwich anyway, but points to anyone who knows where that name came from.

Derby Tats

I'm not sure why I was so surprised at how much ink derby players tend to have on them.  Perhaps it's because of the time period I was raised in- tattoos were not socially acceptable back then.  I'm glad those days are gone.  That first day I was still pleasantly surprised at how many girls had tattoos.  I'm more surprised now when I find a player who doesn't have ink on them.  I can think of about five or so off the top of my head.  I have friends that have no tattoos, which amuses me.  I was always the last person they would have thought of to get one.

The Book Goal

As I look over the goals I wrote out for the blog I noticed that I hadn't mentioned my book.  So now I'm going to change that, since I want to get this book done by the end of the year.  It's mostly done, but I have to start the long delayed re-write.  I'd blame it on the illness that I experienced this past year, but that's kind of lame now.  No more excuses 2015!   That sounds like a good battle cry.

Jenitellya Profile

Real Name:
Jennifer Renae Petro

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

Jenitellya was created by my father actually. I said or did something silly one day and he replied, "well, that's Jen I tell ya" and we just started busting up laughing. So I made it my video game toon names and then when I became my own alter ego, I became the real life Jenitellya... And if I'm that creative with a name, I can't be that creative with a number.... It's just a number ;).

My first Day...

Since my derbyversary was yesterday, I thought I'd recount that first day in particular.  I really had no idea what I was getting into, that's for sure.  And even if I had known, I'd still do it all over again (except start reffing sooner).  I can hardly believe it's been five years since that fateful day.  I'm looking forward to reffing for the next five years now.  I'm sure roller derby will just keep growing and people will still be playing.

That Pesky #1

With the new number rules taking effect in a little less than a year, there's going to be a lot of players having to change their numbers. Mostly because they have letters with the number one in them to spell out a word.  Again, I can't wait to get rid of letters in numbers, even if that means a loss of the indy feel of the sport.  Heck, I hope they make them only three numbers long.

State Line Roll Out Tourney

This was my first BCB bout since last year.  It was a fun tournament, and went by quickly.  Three thirty minute bouts will be that way.  I'm a fan of shorter bouts during tourneys (not all of the bouts, but at least the opening ones) and this was just a one night deal.  So it worked out perfectly.  There were at least 60 skaters playing in the tournament, so there was a lot of numbers to keep track of, and some improvising had to be done when duplicate numbers were present.  Good thing refs are smart about such things!

Missed the Ball

I had a 24 hour bug yesterday and couldn't get to the BCB Ball. I'm bummed.  Here's a photo of some of the Bomb Squad (courtesy Chase Photography) which makes me wish I hadn't been otherwise rather unpleasantly occupied.  I had a really good time at last year's ball and I'm sure this year would have been just as fun.

The Dollyrots - Brand New Key

OK, so this song really isn't about roller derby, but it does talk about skates. The really old school kind of skates where you needed an actual key to lock them up on your shoes. It was a hit in the early 70s by Melanie and Cher, but I prefer this cover of it. The Dollyrots just plain rock. Check out the rest of their songs as well!

One more goal and then some!

Actually, there will be more than one here, since I thought of a few more since I first posted.  It happens like that, don'tchaknow.  Mostly these will be personal blog goals, since this year will be better than last year.  I'm going to assume I won't be feeling poorly for almost six months this year, unlike last year.  That really did suck, I must say.  I also must say I only missed one bout I was supposed to ref.  Not bad, all things considered.  And in the middle of all of that I reffed four bouts in San Diego.
