2015 ref goals

BCB's Bombsquad has been asked to come up with a three goals for 2015.  I'm rather far behind that, but I will have it done by the deadline tomorrow.  It's been a hectic last couple months for me, but it's time to quit using fusobacterium as an excuse.  I'm just having a bit of difficulty in deciding how I will be moving forward as a ref.

I'm not quitting, nor taking a LOA, since this year I've had a few unexpected and non-voluntary months off- about three months.  Fortunately it was during times there were no bouts happening.  I'm thankful for that, and for at least being healthy enough to ref part of the Labor Pain Tournament in San Diego this year.

Merry Xmas!

Saw this on a site called "Tattoopins" but couldn't find anyone to credit it with, so I'll add the credit if/when someone tells me who did it.  I thought it was neat and fit the holiday today without beating anyone over the head with it.  Which may sound odd, since derby is kind of a beat you over the head with it sort of thing.

Photo Bomb w/ Sweet Pain

Only sorta, cause Cricket knew I was there.  I thought I'd make her look really good!

Cricket- Sweet Pain in her derby guise- was one of my first friends when I started reffing at SDRD.  She's a great person, and she and her beau make one of the best couples I've ever met.  It's really rare when you meet two people you know belong together.  She also has a sweeter tooth than anyone else in the world.

yay for skating last night!

It was great to be back on skates last night.  I reffed the first period of the scrimmage, then shadowed the FPR for the second period.  That was just perfect for this last scrimmage of the season.  I wish there were more, so I could get back into shape faster, but all in all I was happy with not getting tired or run down right in the middle of the period.  I take it to mean my endurance and my health are on the upswing again, which is definitely a good thing.  Now we just have to find a new place to practice again- which may be a done deal by now, I've been a little out of the loop.

back on skates

I'm bringing my skates and gear to scrimmage tonight.  I'm well rested and want to see how my endurance is.  I may not make it through three periods- gotta skate smart, too, you know- but I think I can get through at least one period.  It's a little scary to realize how much this illness has taken out of me, but I feel a lot better and just sitting and watching is really hard on me.

The ref as nso

Since I'm still off skates, I helped out in the penalty box tonight.  I think the last time I did any actual NSO-ing was at Mayday Mayhem.  I did work in the penalty box one bout, and have in the past, so it's not new to me, though I had forgotten how much I love 30 second penalties.  They sure make one stay on one's toes.  You could almost fall asleep waiting for a minute to pass in the "old" days.  I didn't have to manage the jammers, so I was grateful for that as well.

the pack isn't here!

This is Minya (ミニラ Minira), the son of Godzilla.  I was never sure he was a roller derby fan until I saw this picture the other day.  Minya is the American name, his Japanese name is Minira, short for "Mini-Gojira" (Godzilla)).  I prefer Minya, since that's the name I first heard him called at the tender age of eight years old.  Roller derby was still airing in my neck of the woods back then, banked track with all the theatrics.  It was usually on before the monster movie during weekends.  So it's only natural there's a bit of bleed through, right?

Bad Practice Bingo card

I'll admit it right now, I forgot who I nicked this from.  I want to give that person credit, so let me know and I'll amend this blog post post haste.  I'm an alright guy on occasion, huh?

Anyway, this is hilarious.  Since I'm a ref, I'm a bit removed from that actuality of it, but I sure have seen it in practice a lot.  Sometimes I don't think the skaters are even aware they are doing this.  Being on a team means you have to be able to tell your teammates when something is unacceptable, else they will continue to do that same behavior until it blows up in everyone's face.

Xmas themed scrimmage

Since I'm recovering, I didn't ref tonight, but dropped by to say hi. Yes, I can't even NSO yet. I mostly showed up to say hi to everyone and let them know I'm still alive.  I'll be back skating before too long, I hope.   It was kind of interesting to watch three jams before I left, but it's no easy thing for this ref to ever just sit and not ref.  Which is why I had to leave after three jams.
