pre-bout rituals

I'm not a superstitious man at all.  In fact, I tend to use the Popeye word of "stupid-stitious" about such things, though mostly in jest.  Believe what you want, but don't expect me to think walking under a ladder will bring you bad luck.  Sure, it could collapse on you, but that's due to your stupidity rather than "luck".  "So I don't believe in luck."  (Points if you know the song I just referenced, and bonus points if you know the artist!)

Littlehead - Roller Derby Night

Here's a pretty fun bluesy song about roller derby. It has some great footage and the song is about derby. Some of the videos featuring roller derby don't have anything to do with roller derby, not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's nice to find some that do.

Mayday Mayhem Day 3: The Color Orange

So Mayday Mayhem is over.  I would have written about it last night, but I stopped off for a tasty beverage or two and then was "not feeling well" and went to bed.  Anyway, it was a really fun tournament and I learned a lot about NSO-ing and reffing.  And oddly enough about when orange is really red.  I still think that was a language barrier.  I do wish we could have called the Nidaros team "Ginger" after all that, but alas...

Mayday Mayhem Day Two: Return of the NSO

So today I  resumed my NSO career after over three years of not doing any kind of that.  When you only have two refs in your league on a regular basis that's what happens.  Since Team Wonder Woman has two alternate refs today was my day to NSO four bouts.  It was a learning and fun experience.   I'm also getting to know a lot more refs and players, from all over the States and the world.  The Nidaros from Norway I think are almost everyone's favorites, since they came from such a long way.

Mayhem Day One

Since I was designated as an "Alternate Skating Ref" I really didn't think I'd be reffing much this weekend.  Imagine my surprise and pleasure when one of the refs on Team Wonder Woman was going to arrive at afternoon.  I was told I was OPR for the first bout.  This was indeed welcome news for me, and it was a lot of fun with a great bout between Nideros Derbkklubb from Norway who were really fun.  I forget who the played against, I'll have to find out tomorrow, since I need to add this to my derby resume. I liked them so much I bought one of their shirts.

Mayday Mayhem 2014

Tomorrow is the first day of the Mayday Mayhem tournament in Loveland, CO.  I'm an alternate skating ref for the tournament, so I'm not even sure if I'm going to be skating, but I expect to learn a lot and get to watch some good derby being played.  I hope I get to skate in at least one bout, but at least I'll be there.  It'll be fun.

My new helmet

Since my last one got stolen (thanks, dillholes) I've been skating with a loaner helmet.  I'm not complaining about that, since I've still be able to skate and ref and that's a good thing.  But I did want to get a good helmet that fit me (the last one was just a little too snug) and would keep me safe.  So research was to be done.  Which, I'll admit, is not my favorite thing to do.  All I really was going on was that I wanted one that fit me and didn't make my head hurt by the end of a bout.
