Rock, RAWK

This past weekend was full of derby and derby related knowledge.

The Bomb Squad hosted Level 5 WFTDA certified ref EriC RAWK for a referee clinic on Saturday, followed by a double header then a rules clinic on Sunday.  This was really great.  Yeah, I know there are better adjectives out there, but that one will do.  There was so much sheer knowledge stuffed into our heads (both refs and NSO were present at the ref clinic) that is was almost leaking out of our heads by bout time.  I'll going reviewing the bouts on the next post.  Here's a hint- it was a lot of fun!

BCB Season Opener tomorrow night!

I got that patch the other day, maybe a week ago.  It's going on my new ref shirt (apparently WFTDA frowns upon a large bat symbol on ref jerseys).  I hope I have my new shirt tomorrow.  Things are a bit hectic for the shirt printer right now, so I understand how that goes.  I doubt I'll get the patch on it, since we have a clinic most of the day tomorrow before the bout, but maybe I can find some safety pins and stick it on.  It would at least give the shirt some flair, right?

My Jammer Appreciation

So, I don't jam.  This shot is a few years old, and was taken up at a Hidden City practice one cold (ha! he says now from Colorado) Sunday afternoon.  I'm still not exactly sure how this happened, but I'm going to blame Keythong.  As you can see, I was excellent in showing how to fall small.

The Rolling Boutique - by Cloakey Designs

Here's a great roller derby oriented shop, with custom designs.  The designer is Tutu Tuff, and she is really talented.  There are all sorts of fun derby wear, and she can customize just about anything you could want.  Here's the direct link to her Etsy page, so what are you waiting for?  That's right, nothing.  I've known Tutu for several years now, and she has always delivered high quality items for a great price.

San Diego Roller Derby Home Teams overview

by KGB

San Diego Roller Derby decided to mix things up this season with introducing three home-teams to their line up. The Rollin’ Ninjaz, Coastbusters, and Roller Rebel Alliance (what a bunch of nerds we are!). The three teams are scheduled to duke it out from January to July as a “pre-season”.

Slaughterhouse Roller Derby Double Header

As mentioned yesterday, I reffed my first two official bouts in Colorado last night.  Oddly enough, it wasn't for the Bombers, but for the Slaughterhouse Derby Girls in Greeley.  It was a double header,  their Butcher Babes (juniors) played the Southside Juniors first.  These are 12-17 year olds and dang, they are going to be really good skaters when they become "of age".  Good communication with each other on both teams.

The bouts were played under the old rule set and as we all know, I'll be glad to stop that.  Sixty second penalties are just too long now.  Of course, I was supposed to say "major" which I managed about half the time.

first bout of the year

Today I'm headed up to Greeley to ref a double header.  This is going to be my first real bout here in CO.  I'll have a report on it tomorrow.  The first bout is a juniors which is always fun.  It's an hour, so I reckon that these will be older juniors than what I am used to, but that remains to be seen.

a "Major" jar

My derby daughter showed me this today, and it makes me laugh.  Apparently she thinks if she starts one of these jars she'll quit cutting the track as much.  I don't think she's quite as bad as she thinks she is, but what the heck, maybe it'll help.  If nothing else, she'll save up some money for something fun.  Probably for Roller-Con or something like that.

Happy International Women's Day

It's only fitting that Princess Diana of Themyscira is wearing some derby gear in this picture.  Though why someone as strong as Superman would need protective armor is beyond me.  Even Superman seems to have to wear it now.

Sorry, that's my issue and I'll deal with it.

Team Zebra Hand Signal Shuffle

This is actually a good tool, and at six minutes would be good exercise as well. It's a pretty fun song as well. He gets all the calls in there as well. There are times in the heat of the moment when a ref calls the wrong penalty. We usually get the proper call to the penalty tracker, but at the time of the penalty it can be difficult.

Updated Rules of Flat Track Derby Released

The Updated Rules from WFTDA have been released, and will go into effect on April 1st.

The best news is that penalties are now 30 seconds long for everyone.  Having reffed a few bouts under these rules it really helps cut down on the power jams.  I have written  about this before and it will only make the game more exciting to watch.  I've had family members ask me why the players stop on  the track at times.  They thought this was very boring, by the way.
