Dear WFTDA...

Stuart here and I have a rather late Xmas request or two for you all, things we think will possibly improve roller derby a bit.  Just an opinion of course.  I have no say in anything at all, but I've heard some fans discussing stuff and this is what I thought would help.  I've talked about this with some other officials, but in no way does this represent any stance of anyone but me.  Of course, I am smarter than a lot of people and know what's best, so please keep that in mind when reading this.

Derby Roll Call site

Seems like more and more teams are not registering names with TwoEvils. I know SDRD made this decision over a year ago and it makes sense now.  Back in the day when roller derby began it's resurgence it was an easy thing to keep track of people's derby names and prevent repetition.  You could check the site for a certain name, and see if it was there already.  It even showed you any similar names.  I always wondered what happened to people who wanted to use their real names to skate with.

Bobby Light Profile

Real Name:
Beau Marshall Humphries

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
I carried over my work nickname to derby. I was a big fan of the show Rob and Big on MTV. He has a character named Bobby Light that is a faux R&B singer. They did a little music video called Dirty Girl that I thought was hilarious. So I would sing it and dance on the flight deck to pass the time on deployment. Next thing you know everyone is calling me Bobby.  That literally became my name at work. So when I started derby and they said I needed a name why would I choose anything else?

What did you do athletically before you got into derby?
Ran track in school. Skateboard, surf, snowboard and Roller skated.

How did you get into derby?
Friend of mine at work invited me to watch a Starlettes game at Skateworld. Walked in and it was packed. Standing room only. It was awesome. They announced they were looking for volunteers to ref. I've loved roller skating since I was 12 so I jumped at the chance to ref. When we finally started a men's team I was first in line to play.

yeah, I miss it

It's been almost three months since I was in this rink at Skateworld.  One can take a rink like this for granted after being there for four years.  So when I got these pictures today it made me realize how much I missed the place.

BCB Black and Gold Ball

On Friday the 12th the Boulder County Bombers held the Black and Gold Ball, which was loads of fun.  There was good food from Noodles and Co and a fun photo booth.

I had a really good time, as it was fun to get to know everyone there a little better, outside of the rink.  Since everyone was dressed up I didn't always recognize people, even the ones I know a little bit already.  Fortunately I have no problems asking anyone their name, and telling them how nice they look.

CatastroPhoebe Profile

Real Name:
Sydney Cooper

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
Well, I spent a long time trying to come up with a original name with no luck. I was hanging out with my roommate Sam one night and we were trying to play around with ideas. I said something ridiculous like "Mollicious" and he replied "You could do that with anything, like CatastroPhoebe." BAM! Right then and there I decided on that haha. My number is a lot more boring, they asked what I wanted my number to be and the first thing I thought of was 88; no back story, it was just the first thing I thought of.

Jam Ref

I like it.  It was the last ref position I learned because, well, numbers and I just aren't really good friends, and I was worried about keeping track of such things.  I never thought I'd want to do it, nor even have to do it.  However, after nearly losing a ref position because I didn't know how to jam ref, I decided that it would behoove me to learn how to do it.  It wasn't really that hard, but some of the nuances were not as easy to pick up at first.  Heck, I still have trouble with the whole tapping the helmet for a lap point thing, but I'm getting better at it.
