Litl Rampage: Saga Finale

for those that came in late... Litl Rampage played her first home bout two weeks ago after breaking her leg.  we've been following her return since January and this time, it's all in her own words.  it's been my pleasure to collaborate on this journey with her, and to be able make up some of the best titles for blog posts ever.  I hope she will continue to supply blog posts in the future, whenever she desires.

By Litl Rampage

This is the last part of my saga but first I want to give thanks. Thank you for reading my saga and following me through this roller coaster of a journey. I was delighted to share my endeavors with the public and I couldn’t have done it without McSteamy.

"I Just Want To Skate..."

well this original post sure didn't turn out the way I wanted it to!  so I'll just write this instead of that.

I have complained in the past of refs not getting much recognition- it's like we are there, but we are not to be seen.  it is after all, about the players.  which I completely believe as well.  but without us, there's no bout going on.  and more to my point, without the incredible NSO (Non-Skating Officials) even the refs would be up the proverbial creek.

the City my heart is Hidden in

sassing a ref before the bout
A year ago I was taking a sabbatical from derby.  there were several reasons and there's no need to go into them now.  it was not an easy decision for me to make, but it was the right one.  I needed to find out if I still wanted to be involved in this sport I love so much.

I had planned on taking about two months off, figuring that would be enough time for me to gather my thoughts.  turns out by about three weeks I was missing it quite a bit and was pretty sure I wasn't done.

"Rock Boots" - Pinky Beecroft & The White Russians

wow, there are a lot a lot a lot of roller derby videos out there. or perhaps, videos feature derby players. here's a cool one, and I like this song the most out of all that I've posted so far. Pinky is an Australian singer/songwriter who has been in a band or two. this is from his first solo recording. he's also written for FARSCAPE, a sci-fi series I've never seen, but I've heard good things about.

au revoir, Mickey...

I don't want to write this. (I can tell, I've been sitting here looking at the screen for 20 minutes.) in derby, players come and go, sometimes quickly.  you see new faces all the time at practice, and then sometimes they are gone.  it's the way all hobbies go.

refs are a bit different.  yeah yeah, I can hear the jokes already.  since there are fewer of us we get to know each other quicker.  we work more bouts together and we have to talk to each other the entire bout.  it's how we roll.

an unlikely hero...

that was me tonight.

I'm not known as a fast skater.  these days in WFTDA even jam refs don't have to be super fast, any more (they can cut through the middle of the track to keep up, dontcha know) and if you are an IPR sometimes you barely have to move.  so that's been my reasoning- I have be watching the players carefully and speed is not my priority.  I've got plenty of skating stamina though, I'm not ever worried about that.

SoCal vs Tent City Terrors

so last night I packed up my gear, carpooled with Tom and Patience down to Skate San Diego in El Cajon to ref the first ever WFTDA sanctioned bout in San Diego.  the new facility was a great improvement over the last place (gotta love functioning bathrooms).  it was warm, but since the bout started at 8 PM, it cooled off just fine.  it was also really great to see some old friends and make some new ones as well.  I found the sport court to be very sticky, but several other refs told me they thought it was quite slick.  go figure.

Sanctioned WFTDA bout

tonight I will referee the first ever fully sanctioned WFTDA bout in San Diego.  the teams competing are SoCal and the AZRD Tent City Terrors.  about two years ago I reffed SoCal's inaugural bout.  I was skating OPR with my barely healed sprained ankle (and by barely I mean I probably shouldn't have been skating on it yet).  it was the second time I had ever OPR'd, and I knew none of the other refs at this point, what with being so new in my career as well.

this is derby love?

if so, I don't get much love any more.  I'm not complaining about that at all, since I rarely have to give out insubordination penalties to the various leagues that I ref for, and I am grateful for that.  sometimes I think the more cantankerous players get some extra leeway, since we are "used" to them being that way, and the quieter player who listen and learn and then are either frustrated or surprised and yell.  it usually catches me off guard when that happens as well.

BLACK SPIDERS - KISS tried to Kill me

it's amazing what you will find on youtube when you search "roller derby music". here's a band called the Black Spiders doing an homage to a really cool movie, and talking about one of my favorite bands AND there's derby girls in KISS make up. I think we all know how hot girls in KISS makeup are to me, and then they are skating? the song is a bit clever as well, talking about the band, though I'll have to listen again to see if I can get the gist of it.

hmm, now that was interesting...

last night the SDRD Bandettes played the Beach City Riptide Rollers in a hard fought bout.  I was the head ref and was happy with my refs.  I had a great crew with me so the bout went mostly pretty smoothly.

how do I know the crew was doing their jobs?  I got to chat with the coaches several times throughout the bout, and while exchanges got a bit loud here and there, it never got heated or personal.

Maxxi Bad profile

Real Name:
Ashley Hugues

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
Three weeks after I started playing, I was to participate in a rookie game and needed a name. I held a contest at work and picked the name that made me laugh the hardest. My Mom even admits that Maxxi suits me better.

How did you get into derby?

I forced my friends to go roller skating with me for my birthday - I was dressed ridiculous and was racing little boys when one of them asked me if I was a derby girl.... I nearly tackled him to get more information. I showed up the next practice.

How long have you been playing?

Wow, almost four years now I think!

Litl Rampage: The Penultimate Perambulation

for those that came in late...

we've been reading about Litl Rampage's journey back to roller derby.  this is the 10th installment in her saga and quite possibly the second to last one, as she is about to make her home re-debut this coming Saturday.  will all the hard work lead to success?  I suggest you come and witness if you can!

OK, your first home bout is since your accident is coming up. How do you feel?
I feel excited! I worked hard to make this roster and I am pumped up for it. My coach is getting his Bandettes ready for this bout and we are hungry to take this win. No one should miss this bout because the Bandettes will be rocking their new uniforms for the first time this season. Anyone can pre-order tickets for $10 by calling Skateworld at: 858-560-9349! The bout is this Saturday, June 8th at 6907 Linda Vista Rd. San Diego 92111.

Phoenix Endsong profile

Real Name:

What is the origin of your derby name and number?
Phoenix Endsong is my all time favorite comic book series and 1X05 is the number of my favorite Battlestar Galactica episode "You Can't Go Home Again." It also plays into the fact that Phoenix Endsong was a five issue series. See what I did there?

How did you get into derby?

I was tired of going to the gym and staring at a wall. I don't remember what made me Google "roller derby" one day at work but I did. After I saw my first bout and watched one of the skaters get shoulder checked into the wall, it was love.

I roller skated to your door at daylight...

forgive me if this sounds whiny or self absorbed, but since it happened yesterday I'm going to write about it to get it off my chest.  if it's the worst thing to happen to me I should be happy, right?  I'm trying to keep that in mind while I write this.

yesterday at about 4 AM in the morning my car was broken into and my skate bag was taken, along with my massage table. that part isn't really integral to this story, but if someone wanted to really get to me they took the two things that matter most to me, huh?

Shanghai Surprise profile

Real Name:
Su Ling Hewitt

what is the origin of your derby name and number?
Chinese descent and 5 cause its an odd number. I don't place a lot of meaning on my name or number, just thought it was cool.

How did you get into derby?
I've been roller skating since I was a kid, so when a friend from work mentioned she played roller derby it peaked my interest. Got the info, went to my first practice and was hooked.
