2-23-13 SDRD Apex Jump

I know, it's short and it's silent, but it's a pretty cool little video. Atomic Mojo has got more of the bout on his channel, so click through if you want to see it. it's from the Bandettes vs Hidden City Bullies. I like forty minute bouts, I must say.

Griffin profile

wow, it's really been since February that I've done a profile here?  well, hopefully that's going to change now.
Real Name:
Tom Griffin
Derby Name:
Griffin (formerly Tomikaze!) (aka Keythong)
what is the origin of your derby name and number?
You'll have to thank my family for my derby name, since it is my real name. Ironically, my family uses a nickname for me. My number is now 10. That's the traditional number for a striker in soccer. I played soccer. I was a striker. I wore 10. As a ref, however, I've been struck more than I strike. (I wish he was joking about this!)
How did you get into derby?
I blame whiskey.  (odd, usually he blames Patience)

player bios

so it's been a few months since I've had a new player bio... what's up with that?  I know there are plenty of players in my own league that haven't done one, so let's get on it, people!  it's not like I do this blog for my health, you know.  (hopefully no one takes that seriously.)  I'd also like to have some players from different leagues do some, as mostly it's SDRD and HCDG.  the most popular posts have been the bios, and then Litl Rampage's Saga.  and that's about to end (for the better)!

a throwback Thursday photo

here's a throwback picture from July of 2010, during my first year of roller derby.  I think we are doing what we call the "double line" drill- and yes, that's me, doing said drill. I'm not exactly sure why I'm doing the drill, but it was fun at the time.  I'm glad there is no one on my left side, as that would be a high block right into someone's face.  like I needed more proof I should ref rather than skate.

the next big thing?

I've discussed the future of roller derby in the past.  every one knows the problem with WFTDA these days, it's too damn slow and not fun for the fans to watch now.  teams exploit loopholes almost as soon as new rule sets are out.  as USARS gains some ground, it has the exact opposite problem- it's too damn fast, and ends up looking like the players are just skating around the track at top speed.

a bout last night

SDRD played Bay Area Derby last night. it was their Berkley Resistance team playing the Starlettes.  the Stars had been practicing what to do with power jams, both getting them and being on the other end of them.  so I had been expecting to see a lot of slow derby where the pack barely moves.

it's not my kind of derby at all, as might be apparent in some of these posts.  it's an easy bout to ref, but it's not very exciting to viewers.

tweeting refs

been on twitter for a while, but recently discovered that there was a lot more to it.  you know, retweets, hashtags, and all that fun stuff.

yeah, I know, I'm slow with all this teck-nah-lo-gee.  in my day, we had to get letters to know what was going on in the world!  and we loved it!  dang that grumpy old man, he shows up everywhere these days.

I don't always post about derby, but it shows up from time to time.  there are a few derby refs I follow, and several derby people, so I'll list a few of them here:

when refs coach...

so tonight, with the regular coach being away to play in a tournament this weekend, the two head coaches of SDRD got to run practice for about 40 minutes.  this was pretty spur of the moment, as I was mostly kidding when I suggested it to Hockey Honey before practice started.  much to my surprise (and even more to Griffin's!) she told the group that we'd be doing something awesome after a few drills.  sure, no pressure there!

Derby (1971)

here we have another movie review from my other blog (see here) though it's not very in depth.  naturally I've added a few more things to it for this here actual roller derby blog...

I really wanted to like this movie.  I love roller derby and to see what it was like in the early 70s sounded great.  unfortunately, this was a very low budget movie that was more preoccupied with non-derby related nonsense than with the actual playing of roller derby.

here's the synopses from IMDB- "Derby is a fascinating look at the world of 1970s professional Roller Derby. Features lots of on-track action, as well as an off-track behind the scenes look at the lives of the Roller Derby pros featured in the film." Written by Fryingham

Black and White Brawl in Yuma

appropriate for my 100th post is a bout in 100 degree weather.  it was outside on black asphalt, which means it was probably hotter than what the heat index was showing, but really, once you get over 95 degrees, does it matter?

Saturday Yuma Roller Derby League hosted a black and white scrimmage.  it was attended by skaters from several leagues, including SDRD, HCDG, Wine Town Rollers and the Havasu Hit Girls.  it was about 100 degrees at 6 PM when we started, but it "cooled" off pretty quickly and the heat wasn't a factor the the bout progressed.  thank goodness!

so you wanna ref...

this was created by Heather Hard Dash Steeves, and it's pretty great.  I don't know her personally, but she's obviously a genius about roller derby referees.

except for the nerd part.

Unholy Rollers (1972)

another repost from my other blog, done back on 10-09-12 (see post here).  this was almost a renegade roller derby production, I've learned. updated a bit...

had never heard of this movie until the other day.  so far it's a pretty typical 70s exploitation movie, but at least it's got some good moves and a decent cast.  the banked track isn't very banked, but I think that's how it was in the early 70s.  this is what I remember seeing in the 70s, at least while waiting for the monster movie to start.

Rockettes vs Prison City 3-10-12

here's a bout from just over a year ago. remember the second whistle starts for jammers? I don't, nor do I miss them at all. and surprisingly enough, I don't miss minors much either. it's pretty interesting how big a difference a year can make. this was shot by my sister Sugar Britches, and her commentary is one of the best parts of the whole thing!

HCDG Rainbow Round Robin Tournament

on April 28th 2013 Hidden City Derby Girls hosted a four team tournament.  it was open to players of all skill levels.  the teams were chosen at random, and players were assigned a color.  the teams were Red, Yellow, Green and Purple.  not quite a full rainbow, that can be the goal for next year, right?

oh, and there was also Team Black and White, the team that always wins- the referees!  I was included in this team, as one of the jam refs for the entire tournament.

testing the refs!

in order to get on a team, most leagues make their skaters take a written test about their skills.  this makes sense, as you want them to have a basic understanding of what they are doing. (this picture courtesy of Matthew Becker Photography, he's great, check his stuff out!)

do many leagues make their refs take a similar test?  we've done some league wide in the past, but not very often.  we've decided that we need to do a basic ref test, since we rely on many skaters to ref when they aren't rostered for a bout.  it was written over this weekend and I took it today (passed with 100%, he says with all modesty).
