About Last Night

Look, I love having players ref.  it's great to have any extra sets of eyes, and it's great for the players because it will help them improve their game.  it also lets them know that reffing is not an easy thing.  I know it's easy to see penalties when you are just standing or watching one part of the track or your favorite player- I NSO'd for nearly a year and could always see missed or blown calls.  but once you are out there on skates with stripes on it's a completely different experience.  so it's good for players to be aware of that.  there's less griping at the refs then.

here are two videos showing the entire SDRD vs OC bout.  it's shot really well and this is a really good tool to check out calls for refs.  I guess the players might learn a thing or two as well by watching... nah, they never do anything wrong now, do they?  ask any derby girl, they never deserve the penalties called them!  it's nice when someone records the bouts, and even nicer when they are up on youtube to watch!

Litl Rampage: The Ankle Renormalization

for those that came in late... Litl Rampage has been on her journey to recovery now for almost three months, and today she got the news she's been waiting for.  here's her reaction!

So... what's the good news?
I have been looking forward to today, March 26th 2013 because I had an appointment with Dr. Valletta at 1:00pm. I was very anxious and nervous to see him but before I could his nurse had to examine my ankle/foot. She noticed a little bit of swelling on the top of my foot. I immediately thought the swelling on my foot would ruin “it” for me but Dr. Valletta didn’t believe so. So, the good news is that he gave me the green light to…. GO SKATE!!! He told me not to dive right into roller derby yet because he wants me to protect my ankle until I feel comfortable enough to play again. Although I cannot be on the jammer line just yet, I would take skating than sitting on the sidelines any day!

Injuries at Practice

or what to do and what not to do when one occurs.

I've seen more than my fair share of injuries that have happened at practices.  heck, I've been injured twice as well, and I'm a ref!  that's not supposed to happen!  to be fair, I was playing roller hockey in my second month of skating, and was doing a transition too fast, but still...!  many times a skater does this to themselves- being first is good, but playing smart is great.

our number one job as refs is safety.  we say that every time at the ref meeting, and it's usually the first thing we say.  we all know what to do when a player gets injured during a bout.  it helps that there is usually an EMT crew there to take care of the more serious matters, but it's always a sobering moment, no matter the seriousness of the injury.

it's called "crowing" and it first appeared in the SDRD VS OC bout last Saturday.  the name was coined by Angeroo, the MVP of the bout, who named it after her fellow jammer par excellence Crowe,

Litl Rampage: The Massage Paradox

What kind of PT exercises are you doing?
I continue to ride a seated exercise bicycle for 8-10 minutes and I still do several different types of stretches in the stretch cage. Stretching has gotten a lot easier for me. After stretching I do step-ups, lunges, squatting, calf raises, etc. I also do a lot of exercises that involves balancing on one leg. Recently, I started using an ankle resistance band, which I believe helps me with my chasses (wink, wink).

Leprecharnage 3/17/13

This past Sunday SDRD hosted a green and black scrimmage for all age groups and skill levels.  I sort of was de facto head ref and there were plenty of other volunteers as well.  the first hour or so was for the beginner/intermediate level, and I pack reffed that one.  that one had the most adult participants in it, and it was fun to ref.  the rookies always seem to go all out during such these scrimmages.

Jam Reffing in OC

This was a very busy derby weekend.  Saturday night I reffed up in Orange County.  this was my first away bout as a jam ref, and my first away bout reffing for the Starlettes as well.  so I was a bit nervous, actually.  since I've been jam reffing for about 6 months now, I wanted to be on top of my game, so on the way up my friend Tom and I went over the various jam reffing rules to make sure I had a firm grasp on them.

Ragin' Redhead's first derby day (and a little more)

The rink is only five minutes up the street from my house but the drive seems to be forever and to short at the same time.. I had been thinking about this moment for over a year. I had already been told I could not do this. That I would get hurt wasn't coordinated enough. I am gripping the wheel white knuckles showing. The music is blaring. I am trying to pump myself up. I am saying in my head over and over again. I can do this. I am strong. I am not scared. I got this. I get to the rink. Did I wear the right thing. I wish I had a friend with me. I am better off alone it will force me to talk to people.

March Madness Double Header 3-13-13

this morning SDRD hosted the Hidden City Derby Girls for a rousing double header.  I ref for HCDG on a regular basis during the season, and I consider them my second team.  I know and love many of the girls the team, so it was like having one big family smash into each other for a couple hours,

it was a lot of fun to be a part of.  I jam reffed the C team bout and Head Reffed the B team bout.  both went pretty smoothly overall, with few official time outs and a modicum of coach yelling.

The Basics of Flat Track Roller Derby

ever have someone ask you just what roller derby is all about? well, here's a quick handy dandy guide to the very basics of this great sport. it's done by the Hammer City Roller Girls. it was made in 2009, but overall it's pretty much what roller derby is today. aside from the slow-ness of what it's sort of turned into. damn I wish WFTDA would get ban clockwise skating from their rules. and make the pivot line the place to start for blockers again. I miss that.
