Litl Rampage: The Surgery Formulation

(when we last left Litl Rampage she was up at the USARS National Tournament, having been voted "best Jammer" in her first bout, but with an unexpected injury.  here is the next chapter!)

The EMT at the tournament told me that her educated guess was I had at least fractured my ankle. She had advised me to get x-rays as soon as possible. A few of my teammates rushed me to the nearest urgent care after the Starlettes took their second win over the Resurrection Derby Girls.

The results of my x-rays were not what I wanted to hear. The EMT was correct - I had broken and fractured my left fibula. The doctor told me I would have to get a metal plate when I return home. A nurse put me in a boot and gave me an additional set of legs (crutches).
Knowing I had a broken leg didn't stop me from being my team's biggest cheerleader for their final bout against Oly on the following day. The Starlettes put up a good fight and won silver.

Ragin' Redhead profile

Real Name: Kristina Dale
what is the origin of your derby name and number?
After many options and many suggestions I came up with Ragin' after reading the meaning on Urban and same for Redhead since I am a red head. I needed something completely unique since I was moving to Japan and Twoevils took so long to be registered on. I didn't wan to have to change my name after I had already become known by it. My number is just a number that has always shown up in my life. I see it every where and always have from even my childhood.

How did you get into derby?
I was very much into fitness and when I saw a flyer for San Diego Roller Derby I knew instantly I wanted to do it. However I was talked out of it. The person convincing me it wasn't right for me I wasn't physically ready or coordinated enough and that if I were to be hurt it would be bad for my lifestyle. It took me a year to get the courage to tell them and prove to them I could do it. Unfortunately I lost a whole year of my derby life. It is a mistake I wish I could take back!

no, I won't take it!

so last Sunday night I had a truly surreal experience.  now that it's been a few days it's funny.  you just never know what's going to happen there.

I've been playing at the Blarney Stone's Open Mic (in Claremont, click the link, like their page) now for almost six months.  I play an electric guitar, when most of the other musicians play an acoustic.  So I use my own amp and distortion pedal because "I wanna rock!" and make a lot of noise.

Bran Bam! profile

Real Name:
Brandy"BRAN BAM!" Washington, I’m also known by my alias Brandee Lee

what is the origin of your derby name and number?

Bran is my nickname I’ve been called since I can walk. MOMMA BAM! (my mom) Use to call me branpan when I was in high school, when I joined derby I wanted a tougher  version of my nickname, so I played with it a bit and BAM! came up. My number 88 was the year I was born, I’m a true 88 =]

How did you get into derby?
I started out as a fan and I loved  to go roller skating with my dad. Few years after I graduated high school, I thought to myself I’m good at roller skating why not do it as a sport. One day I Google a team, at the time I thought San Diego Roller Derby was the closet team, I practiced with them for a bit.

the Saga of Litl Rampage

(here we have a new feature- +Litl Rampage  got injured up at the USARS National Tournament.  I was going to update her bio page, but then had the thought that we might want to chronicle her journey from injury to recovery.  many skaters suffer a broken left tibia or fibula, but I don't always know them!  India has kindly decided to do this, so it should prove very interesting. please leave posts or comments anywhere.  my comments will be in italics.)

how did you feel when finding out you were on the USARS roster?
I did what any skater would have done when they saw their name on a roster - I jumped for joy! But I must have jumped 10 times higher and longer because my name wasn't on any typical roster, it was on the roster for the USARS National Championship Tournament (December 14- 16). I was so ecstatic about making roster that I almost forgot I was going to play as a Starlette (SDRD's A team) for the first time!
Ever since the roster was announced, I made a goal to myself to work, focus and skate hard at every practice leading up to the tournament. I felt it was important to boost the basic fundamentals I was lacking in during my spare time and on the weekends. My hardship and determination paid off since my starts, stops and endurance had greatly improved. I must give a high five to those to helped me with my goal: Donnie Holland, Jessica Jozwiak, Cyn Ortega, Marcy Moriel, Cat Weekly, +David McRobie , Hockey Honey and Coach B Stang.

Mistress Doom profile

                                                                Real Name:
Krayla Bledsoe

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

Well, several years before I began playing derby...I was addicted to Halo 2...Mistress Doom was a screen name an old friend picked out for stuck..then when it was time to think of a derby name, I kind of couldn't think of much. My number is Domin8...which I thought was kind of clever to go along with the whole "Mistress" thing.

How did you get into derby?

I went to a tattoo convention in 2008 to hear a band and get a tattoo...and I saw these two girls skating around wearing striped stockings and gear and looking awesome. I asked them what they were about and they told me about Green Country Roller Girls. I went home and added them as friends on Myspace (I know), and kind of forgot about it. Two entire years later in 2008 they popped up in my feed with a recruiting experience necessary. I was looking for something of my own and it was a good time...I sent them an email, went to a practice, have been skating ever since.

SFV 7 vs 7 tournament

yesterday I had the pleasure of reffing a 7 vs 7 tournament up in North Hollywood for San Fernando Valley Roller Derby.  it was set up by Killo Kitty.  Retro Ruby staffed the refs and NSO for the event and they got skaters from all over California, from Oakland to San Diego.

there were five teams of 7 girls each.  the bouts were 15 minutes long with no time outs except for injury, though we allowed the teams to call one if they absolutely had to.  the clock kept running though, so they better make it count!

Litl Rampage profile

Real Name:
India Raven Wood

what is the origin of your derby name and number?

I knew my skate name had to be tough because I certainly do not look the part. My skate name was inspired from a well-known cage fighter, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson. He looks like a mean mofo but he has a good sense of humor and a friendly personality.  My number is my birthday: September 13th.

How did you get into derby?
My boyfriend took me to see the SDRD Starlettes play against Alaska Rage City Roller Girls in 2011. I had difficulties following the game since I've never seen a roller derby bout before but it was so much fun watching them skate. I wanted to skate just like them so I signed myself up to join the league knowing that I never skated on quad skates before.

Halestorm - It's Not You

warning, there's some serious rock and roll about to happen... and it features a flat track derby team! I'm not sure who the team is, but someone will tell me eventually. Lzzy rocks both the vocals and the guitar. rock music and roller derby go hand in hand!  the refs even get featured a bit!

HCDG Awards Party 2012

last night I was honored to go to the Hidden City Derby Girls awards ceremony and party.  I've been reffing for them most of this year, long enough that they have become what I consider my second team.  they are a great group of girls (and all the guys that support them) to skate with. they aren't picture, but they are there, promise!

the after party was at a place called Smitty's, where we went for karaoke.  that was really fun, as well.
the party was at California Fruit Wine up in Vista and had good food and drink.  there was wine and beer.  the chocolate cherry wine was quite good, which surprised me since I'm not much of a wine drinker.

WFTDA new rule set

so last night I got to ref my first scrimmage under the new WFTDA rule set.  it was fun and challenging, as I was jam reffing and had to remember the new cutting rules, since if you cut one opposing player it's a major now, what with there being no minors at all any more.  I think it only happened once, but as I tell the girls, scrimmage is where you are supposed to make your mistakes, so you don't make them during the bout.  that goes for refs, as well.

Birdie BurpsAlot profile

Real Name:
Cindy Horst

what is the origin of your derby name and number?
I came to HCDG as Slashay. I was given that name and not thrilled with it. The girls of HCDG soon noticed that I tend to release air once I start moving around LOL I love birds, bright colorful birds so Birdie BurpsAlot was a winner. NC17 I chose that number because I seem to talk dirty quite often but I do have a censor when young children are around.

How did you get into derby?
A friend of mine posted about needing players for a new team. I grew up skating and hadn't in years. I was intrigued! That team was short lived especially once we found out HCDG was right next door.

How long have you been playing?

I have been in skates 15 months and Jan 2013 will be my one year anniversary with HCDG

Skatetown, USA (1979)

(another repost from my other blog, as always, slightly updated for your viewing and reading pleasure.)

I've never heard of this movie at all.  the music at the beginning of the trailer makes one think it's almost a horror movie!

I have to take issue with "the best music" claim...

USARs Nationals Tournament

so the USARS National Tournament is the 14th-16 of this month.  since my team won the western championship I thought I'd share some thoughts of mine about the rule set and the play in general.

after all, everyone is entitle to my opinion, right?

I like the ruleset for the most part.  I like reffing fast derby once again and I love NO CLOCKWISE skating on the track.  that's just about the best rule ever.  it's a minute in the box even for entering the track from the wrong direction, so this keeps the game moving right along.  I like the lead jammers rules and the pivot being able to become an active scorer.  makes the coach and players think of new types of strategies.
